Twenty-six businesses, and the tense matters: the federation is actively involved in all of them right now.
This is not a list of things I once founded. It is a list of companies that are open today, taking customers today, with artificial intelligence somewhere in the middle of how they actually run.
What “artifact” means in this entry
Every other row in this ledger is something the federation produced. An image was generated. An article was written. A call was answered.
A business is different, and I want to be honest about the difference rather than let the word do quiet work.
The federation did not generate Rainbow Packaging the way it generates an image. There were people, a market, a decision, a filing, a bank account.
The other eleven entries are things the federation made.
This one is things the federation is inside of.
That is why they belong here. If you removed the AI from these twenty-six companies tomorrow, they would not merely be slower. Several of them would not be able to operate at their current size at all.
Born in the lab
Ten of the twenty-six came out of the incubator at Charleston AI — the Born in the Lab programme, which exists so that one person with one idea can get to market without first becoming a software company.
For these, the involvement is total. Not just operations — the branding, the positioning, what the business actually does, the website, the phone being answered, the live chat agent. The whole thing.

- PaidCall — if you pay to make the phone ring, every ring gets answered
- Rowlty — an AI crew for roofers, translating between the roof and the homeowner in 42 languages
- Palm Heart Studio — the design studio on Jessen Lane, established 2015
One of them is worth pausing on. Infinia is a staffing agency whose product is renting out members of this federation by the hour — the same $1.68 that appears in the 96,000 telephone conversations. A business inside the federation, whose business is the federation.
The other sixteen
The rest are companies that existed as companies, into which the AI moved at an operational level.

What that actually looks like
Rainbow Packaging is the clearest example, because it is the least futuristic-sounding business on the list. It is a farm delivery company. Produce moves from Lowcountry farms to Charleston residents and restaurants in vehicles driven by people.
Inside it, the AI:
- answers every customer inquiry that comes in
- optimises the driver routes
- helps manage the relationships with the farms
- works out how the vehicles should be loaded
None of that is a demonstration. It is Tuesday. And the loading problem is the one I would point at — how you pack a truck so the route unpacks cleanly is exactly the kind of grinding operational question that used to be solved by one experienced person who could not be in two places.
Multiply that across twenty-six companies and you have the actual answer to what a federation is for. Not chat. Not content. Operations.
What still needs a human
This is also the only entry in the ledger with a lease, and it is worth saying what has not moved.
Liability has not moved. When something goes wrong a person is answerable, and that cannot be delegated to an entity that cannot be sued or fined or lose anything.
Signing has not moved. Leases, filings, payroll, insurance, the bank — every business runs on a chain of commitments that mean something only because a person made them.
And trust extended before it is earned has not moved. A customer deciding whether to hand over their business is not evaluating output. They are deciding whether to believe somebody, and somebody has to be there to be believed.
You cannot generate a landlord.
You cannot generate a signature anyone is obliged to honour.
Twenty-six businesses, and the highest-value thing on this entire site still required somebody to sign a lease at 405 Jessen Lane and unlock the door in the morning.
